Scientists believe a massive asteroid is the most likely explanation for the extinction of the dinosaurs. However, if an asteroid did wipe out all species of dinosaur there should be a 200 km crater somewhere on the planet. Scientists hunt for this asteroid evidence in this video from BBC show 'What Really Killed the Dinosaurs?'.

What killed the dinosaurs? For years, scientists have come up with different theories -- everything from massive volcanoes to multiple asteroids hitting the Earth. In this Science Bite, Museum scientist Kirk Johnson explains how an international team of scientists came to the conclusion that a single, giant asteroid was the real dinosaur killer.

NASA's Dawn spacecraft is on its way to study a pair of asteroids after lifting off Thursday, September 27, 2007 from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 7:34 am EDT (4:34 am PDT). Mission controllers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., received telemetry on schedule at 9:44 am EDT (6:44 am PDT) indicating Dawn had achieved proper orientation in space and its massive solar array was generating power from the sun. During the next 80 days, spacecraft controllers will test and calibrate the myriad of spacecraft systems and subsystems, ensuring Dawn is ready for the long journey ahead. Dawn's 4.8-billion-kilometer (3-billion-mile) odyssey includes exploration of asteroid...

From the acclaimed Science Screen Report DVD series, provided to schools nationwide free of charge since 1970. Between Mars and Jupiter is the asteroid belt. Every so often, asteroids collide and tumble towards the Sun. If they pass Mars, they can be drawn towards Earth, sometimes colliding. Sixty-five million years ago an asteroid impact may have been the cause of the climate change that killed the dinosaurs. Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system. It is a ball of gas with no solid surface. Regal Jupiter is orbited by more than 60 moons of which four are large enough to be small planets

This is my video for launching our Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) week at Honywood Community Science School. There'll be plenty of activities to go with this theme, including pupils voting for who should be saved. Who would you save if you had to go and colonise another planet? I take no credit for any of the video clips I have used; I just cobbled them together from other sources including Horizon (BBC) and the excellent Discovery Channel asteroid impact video. I totally pinched their idea for using "Great Gig in the Sky" by Pink Floyd.
